En compagnie du photographe Bernard Grismayer, j’ai eu la chance de participer au Mahamastakabhishka en février 2018. Cette fête religieuse jaïn a lieu tous les 12 ans, à Shravana Belgola, dans l’état indien du Karnataka. C’est un événement hors-norme et attire plus de 50 000 personnes sur 10 jours.
Ce fut une grande découverte, d’abord de ce lieu unique avec ces deux collines et son histoire, de cette impressionnante statue de Bahubali, de la culture et religion jaïn et de ces festivités colorées.
La statue de Bahubali fut exécutée entre 978 et 983. Avec ses 17,92 mètres, elle est a plus grande statue monolithique au monde. On y accède en gravissant 614 marches taillées dans la roche.
À l’occasion de ces cérémonies, des moines et des personnalités de la communauté jaïn montent sur un échafaudage spécialement construit pour déverser les onctions sur la statue de Bahubali selon un rituel précis.

 

In the company of photographer Bernard Grismayer, I had the chance to participate in the Mahamastakabhishka in February 2018. This religious Jain festival takes place every 12 years in Shravana Belgola, in the Indian state of Karnataka. It is an extraordinary event and attracts more than 50,000 people over 10 days.
It was a great discovery, first of all this unique place with these two hills and its history, this impressive statue of Bahubali, Jain culture and religion and these colorful festivities.
The statue of Bahubali was executed between 978 and 983. With its 17.92 meters, it is the largest monolithic statue in the world. It is accessed by climbing 614 steps carved into the rock.
On the occasion of these ceremonies, monks and personalities of the Jain community climb on a specially constructed scaffolding to pour the anointings on the statue of Bahubali according to a precise ritual.
